Janie,

I think the woman thing is all wrong.  (Unless you're a non profit-then it works in your favor for funding.)

I think the better approach is like Orville Reddenbaucker or Jimmie Dean Sausage, or Wendy's Dave Thomas.  I'm country folk and I got great country products with no preservatives, and the finest ingredients.
Get yourself on TV or something local.  Show the YOU behind the great product.

It's just me and you talking.  "Them city slickers don't know a thing about jerky."  So come on over, sit on the porch and we'll talk some jerky."

Hi,

Thanks!  That makes a lot of sense!  You've given me food for thought. :)  Funny though, so many are striving to be on TV with their products, but I'm not.  Maybe I need to be braver. :)

Thanks again,
Janie

How is your jerky really different from other jerky? And do you know what your jerky eaters are looking for? Is it more convenient packaging? Gourmet flavor? Handmade? Cheaper prices? Is this a product you make or just distribute?

The key is to know your customer. I would suggest if you haven't done so already to take some time to do an informal poll of jerky eaters to see what they're looking for. This will help you develop your USP.

One brilliant marketer shared her formula for killer headlines with me and I think it could help you also narrow your USP. She said to picture your customer sitting on their front porch with their hand under their chin in a "thinking pose." What are the things your customer is wishing for? Something like: "I'm really hungry. I wish I had a snack that was filling, but that didn't make me gain weight." Then turn this into a question. "Do you wish you had a snack that was filling, but that didn't make you gain weight?" This becomes your headline - and could  be morphed into your USP and/or tagline.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tammi for your comments.  I do know that our customers are not purchasing our product because of cheaper prices. There are many others that can take that USP.  I do know that it is about the flavor.   I do know that we have had 165 reviews submitted on our site.

We went to another processing plant the other day and all I can say is every piece of their jerky I tried had a horrible texture and a taste I couldn't imagine anyone would enjoy.

I use to try to market the low carb factor, but with sodium in jerky (even though we have less than most) doesn't always make sense for all dieters so I haven't really tried to push that as much. Even though I have a great customer testimonial that it is about how she has lost so much weight using our product for her healthy snack. She has lost 61 pounds.  It's at the bottom of our jerky news page. http://beefjerkyhouse.com/blog  Sorry, I don't know how to show you just that post.   I do have several  gastric bypass patients because they need the protein, but again not a huge market.  I think basically, our customers are meat/jerky lovers that enjoy our flavor and consistency.

I don't know, .....back to all the problems of expressing the difference.  If I had to sit on the porch and wonder what my customers were wishing for, I would just want to go back and read our reviews to see what I could tell you..

Also, I am not saying other companies don't make good jerky, I just haven't found many I would want to eat, besides a few of them. Some like a thicker piece of meat, which doesn't really seem like what jerky is suppose to be and something I could not personally eat.So, again, how do you express the difference, because there are obviously many that like those products too. It's a huge industry!

But, thanks for your thoughts too!

Also, I am not very tech savvy, so I'm not sure how to send you to my profile on the home based contest to vote for me, but that's okay. :) And yes, we are home based....is there a better place to have your office? And yes we can handle it all right from here, as you can see in my home based profile. :)
