One of the things that makes our state so distinctly powerful when it comes to tech and innovation is our incredible population of engineers that live and work here. Of course, the auto industry is responsible for attracting and retaining most of this talent, but competition in the market for the best engineers is super heated these days.
And this morning on the Business Beat, given the importance of this community to our Michigan region, we’re highlighting a report on where engineering students are setting their sights as the 20 most desirable companies to work for as an engineer, once they graduate. To generate the ranking, Universum, an employer branding specialist, asked roughly 50,000 engineering students: Where do you wanna work when you graduate?
Well, let’s focus on the highlights. Let’s start at number 20 on the list. It’s Intel; roughly 5% of engineering students today pick Intel as their top ideal employer. The Walt Disney Company comes in at number 14 on the list with roughly 6% saying that’s their ideal. NASA at number three, roughly 18% say they wanted to put their engineering talents to work there. Now there are five automotive companies on the list of top 20. Ford comes in at number 13, GM at number 11. Then, of course, Tesla, well, they’re at number two on the list with roughly 22% of graduating engineering students saying that’s the ideal opportunity. Speaking of Elon Musk-led companies, SpaceX, they’re at number one on the list; 25% of engineering students say that’s where they wanna work.
Of course, this means that Elon Musk-led companies get the first- and second-place positions on this ranking list. Meaning that Elon Musk-led companies roughly are viewed by 50% of all engineering graduating talent as being considered ideal places to work once they do graduate.
So that’s the competitive playing field, Paul, interesting and enlightening and important information as we seek to continue our stronghold as a major center of engineering talent here in the state of Michigan.
