This past Wednesday, State of Michigan officials announced how the state, with funding from the Federal CARES Act, has awarded relief grants totaling $15 million to Michigan farms and food processing companies.

Dozens of Michigan farms and food processors have been awarded these critically needed relief grants in order to create safer work conditions for employees and to protect the food industry as a whole, according to an article published by MiBiz.com.

The funding is intended to be used by the companies receiving the grants to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 in the local food industry, such as for COVID-19 testing of employees and personnel, personal protection equipment, and other facility needs.

This past Wednesday, State of Michigan officials announced how the state, with funding from the Federal Cares Act, has awarded relief grants totaling $15 million to Michigan farms and food processing companies.

Jayson Bussa, senior editor with MiBiz.com, writes in his article that dozens of Michigan farms and food processors have been awarded these critically needed relief grants in order to create safer work conditions for employees and to protect the food industry as a whole.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, known as the MEDC, and the state’s department of Agricultural and Rural Development, announced that 177 farms and 159 food processors throughout 55 of Michigan’s 83 counties have received these much-needed funds through these grant awards. The farms received a total of $5 million, while the food processors received $10 million. The MEDC awarded an additional $567,000 to small farms throughout the state, as well.

The funding is intended to be used by the companies receiving the grants to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 in the local food industry, such as for COVID-19 testing of employees and personnel, personal protection equipment, and other facility needs. Saving these jobs and these businesses by making workplaces safer during the crisis not only helps each individual worker and their family survive, it helps all of us, in that it ensures that the flow of these local food resources is maintained and that our state’s economy is not otherwise decimated by the loss of these businesses and the jobs that they provide in this most critical economic sector.

Food and agriculture in Michigan contributes $104 billion to the state’s economy and employees about 800,000 people. And it’s estimated that these grants serve to help save over 26,000 of these jobs across the state. We thank the fine organizations in our state that stepped up and stepped in to deliver these much-needed grants.
