How to Win That Copywriting Job!

Are you following these steps to advance your career and make more money?

Recently, I was looking for BtoB content writers and requested applications. It’s amazing what people sent to me… the good, the bad, and the (very) ugly. Let’s just say that the applicants who followed directions accordingly were placed in the “possible” pile. And those that didn’t were immediately deleted.

As a business owner, I’m busy. I don’t have time to deal with bad applicants. Maybe you can relate? If you are looking for work as a copywriter, or any position, there are a few things to keep in mind…

3 Tips to Win a BtoB Content Writing Project or Another Job

1. Stop Talking About Yourself!

Hello. This is not about you. It’s about what you can do for the employer and their customers.

We don’t care how unique and special you are. We care about your experience relative to our industry and clients. We care about how you are going to use your experience and skills to help us reach our goals. Please use verbiage that reflects this in your application.

2. Follow the Directions.

When a job application says “no e-mail attachments,” “no phone calls,” or provides specific instructions on how to apply, follow these requests. You would not believe how many e-mails are instantly deleted because they contain attachments. Not only do these offer a potential, security risk to the recipient, but most employers do not have time to open attachments for each applicant and view them.

If you simply follow the directions, your chances for an interview and moving forward in the hiring process go way up. There are just too many applicants who send information without following the specific, application instructions. And employers are going to look at your first impression. If you don’t follow directions in the initial application, how are you going to do on an actual project?

3. Be Professional.

Make it easy for employers to get the information they need. Have a good Website that shows samples of your work, testimonials and contact information. And be prepared to provide information quickly, if asked.

By presenting yourself as a responsible and responsive professional, an employer is going to be more likely to hire you.

Do the Work.

Obtaining a BtoB content writing project, or any position for that matter, can be a job in itself. You need to prepare the appropriate information in advance, follow application-directions and respond to employer requests.

It may seem like a lot of work, but it’s worth it. By following these three tips above, you can put yourself on the top of the “hiring pile.” And by obtaining a job, you can spend less time applying for more work and more time enjoying your career choice!
