Good morning, Paul. While there is so much uncertainty about how deeply and broadly COVID-19 is reshaping business and impacting our daily lives, one thing is for certain: Americans are spending more time than ever using and engaging in apps on their mobile phones.

Get this: it is estimated that U.S. adults now spend on average more than four hours a day in apps using their mobile phones, and that represents about 90 percent of all time spent in a given day on one’s mobile phone.

We’re addicted! The average American checks their phone every 12 minutes now. And there are apps for nearly everything and anything you can possibly imagine. Apps to get us up in the morning, apps to help us fall asleep at night, shopping, delivery, to do lists, you name it, it’s all available. And in addition to apps that deliver real value, there are even a few that make you scratch your head and ask, really? The app known as Cuddlr, for example, will help you source someone to cuddle with. Not to date, just to cuddle. And the most useless app ever, that’s right, that’s the name of the app, and of course, it allows you to do one thing, and one thing only: that’s push a button, a single button. Unless of course you download the premium version, which adds a counter of how many times you’ve pushed that button.

Well, in all seriousness, the biggest category of apps in the app store, mobile games with a nearly 25 percent share of all apps. Mobile apps are expected to generate 189 billion in revenue by 2020. The Apple store has 2.2 million apps available for download and the Google Play Store 2.8 million apps. Fifty seven percent of all digital media usage now comes from mobile apps.

So, if you’re an app entrepreneur itching to create the next big thing, get yourself a piece of the sizzling hot mobile app market by creating the next top mobile app.

I do recommend that you lean toward categories of gaming or shopping instead of cuddling or button pushing.
