Good morning, Paul! Well, with Halloween now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to turn our attention to shopping. And boy, are we ever. A new study from tap joy shows that the way we’re doing our shopping and our buying is happening more and more on our mobile phones. In fact, the data shows that 73% of millennials are now using some form of mobile commerce at least one to four times weekly. The survey was conducted of 5,000 people and it reveals that about 80% of those surveyed said that they often made purchases on their phones. Now among the most common purchases were streaming services, roughly 74% of all purchases, restaurant delivery and takeout food ordering 66% and clothing purchases at around 55%. Beauty products came in at 46%. So that kind of paints the picture of the playing field of what we’re buying these days most using our mobile phones. Now if you’re a merchant heading into the holiday season, make sure you’re aware of the action that’s happening. And that’s not only online these days, but more specifically on people’s cell phones. At a minimum, you need to be sure that your website is mobile optimized, meaning that the site loads and performs well on mobile screens. Next, make sure you are optimized for shoppers searching for what they’re looking for on their cell phones. For example, many local searches known otherwise as “near me searches” are performed on the cell phone when the shopper is on the go instead of in front of their laptop or desktop. Most importantly, you need to make sure your Google listing is current and accurate so you come up high when people conduct those searches, looking for something near them to buy. Lastly, take advantage of marketing opportunities suited best for mobile. For example, using SMS text messaging as a way to drive promotions, leading to sales in real time. Now with everybody scrapping to make sales this holiday season, don’t forget about the bonanza of opportunity associated with mobile commerce. I’m Jeff Sloan, founder and CEO of startupnation.com, and that’s today’s Business Beat on the Great Voice of the Great Lakes, WJR.
