WJR Business Beat: OnArrival.com, a Detroit TechTown Success Story (Episode 337)

Good morning, Paul!

Jeff Sloan: This morning on the Beat, an entrepreneurial success story by a really dynamic couple that has the desire to make a success out of their big business idea. And they’re doing just that. They’re doing just that with the help of the Start Studio at Detroit TechTown. The company? OnArrival.com. And the couple behind it? Jordan and KT Morgan. Hey, guys. So tell us about your business OnArrival.com.

KT: Hey, Jeff. So you visit us online at OnArrival.com. You’ll fill out basically like an intake form. You say, if you have an upcoming travel destination where you’re going, how long you’re going, and then we are going to send you back a list of our top picks for attractions, activities, food and drink, nightlife, whatever really you were interested in. It’s $40 for 20 personalized travel recommendations.

Jeff: Now your business model was shaped in part through your experience at the Start Studio at Detroit’s TechTown. In fact, it was through this program that you did a little pivot and modified your model to be the current model you’re pursuing today. Tell us about that.

KT: Oh, yeah, through the process, we totally changed our idea. We thought we wanted to create a marketplace for people to book travel. And what we ended up on is personalized travel recommendations. You have to be able to pivot and that’s exactly what we did.

Jeff: Jordan why’d you guys pick this specific program?

Jordan: No. 1, with it being a hometown program, we knew that it would help us kind of integrate ourselves into the entrepreneurial community in Detroit, but also the guidance and the resources to help us kind of make sense of the very early stages of what we were trying to accomplish. We felt like we knew we wanted to do something, but we needed a little bit of help. And the thought of working with people that had an immense amount of experience would be instrumental for us.

Jeff: And instrumental it was. Congratulations, guys, you’ve got OnArrival really going now. And that makes for a really exciting story: great people with a big idea and the drive to make it. A great Detroit program to support them and give them the guidance they need to make it all go. And a great inspiration for us.
