ToniNelson Congratulations to Toni Nelson, Savvy Entrepreur, located in Placida, Florida, for being named in the Top 100 for 2014 Home-Based 100 Business Winners and in the Top 10 of the Most Innovative Category. We caught up with business owner and entrepreneur Toni Nelson and asked her to answer some questions and share some words of advice and inspiration with our StartupNation audience.

Tell Us About Your Journey

StartupNation: What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
Toni: Being in a position to help other women realize their dream of starting or growing their business.

StartupNation: To what do you attribute your success as an entrepreneur and business owner?
Toni: There are four things I believe have helped me to be a success: Hard work, determination, persistence, and learning and implementing new things. It’s all about continuing to grow.

StartupNation: What ignited the spark in you to start/select your particular business as an entrepreneur?
Toni: Hearing from other women that they were struggling to find out how to start or grow their business. I knew I could help guide them on their journey so they can be seen and heard locally, globally, 24/7.

StartupNation: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

  • Listen
  • Communicate
  • Execute

Words of Wisdom – Inspiration for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

StartupNation: If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?
Toni: Find a mentor or coach. Their knowledge and expertise will save you more time and money than you can imagine.

StartupNation: Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
Toni: I’m a very visual person so seeing photos of people places and things always sparks my inspiration.

StartupNation: What is your favorite motivational/business quote as an entrepreneur?
Toni: Steve Jobs: Your life is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

StartupNation: A motto you live by?
Toni: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Tell Us About Your Business, Experiences, & Funding Your Startup

StartupNation: How did you get funding for your startup?
Toni: I used my own savings.

StartupNation: Recommendations for others starting out?
Toni: I’ve seen people waste money buying the best desk, office chair etc. Focus on putting your money into your product or service and the marketing of it.

Marketing and Building Their Customer Base

StartupNation: How do you market and build your customer base?
Toni: I utilize the power of Visual, Video and Content Marketing

StartupNation: Recommendations for others starting out?
Toni: Start a business blog. It’s one of the most underutilized tools.

Changes in the Business Market

StartupNation: What changes have you seen in your business market since starting?
Toni: Marketing is all about building business relationships. You need to build on the know, like and trust factors. People want to have a connection with the companies they do business with.

StartupNation: What do you see coming that will impact your business?
Toni: Teaching others how to use visual, video and content marketing.

StartupNation: Have a funny story about a client or business transaction that you want to share along with a key lesson learned?
Toni: I worked with a company to create a promotional video for them. They chose a spokesperson who was warm, friendly and well versed. Before filming the video, I offered to give him some coaching tips, which he said he didn’t need. When we got to the site, it should have taken about an hour to film his portion. Three hours later, we were still trying to get him through his “speech.” The moral of the story is accepting help when offered by a professional. It can make your life and project run like a well-oiled machine.
