Good morning, Paul.

You know, one of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face is how to market their products or services. Advertising is really costly, and unfortunately, you have to make a lot of hypotheses about how to approach your advertising and hope it’s right. You have to pick the right channel. You have to pick the right platform within the channel. You have to create the right messaging and the right calls to action, etc. So many ways to miss the mark.

Well, fortunately, social media marketing has many advantages that make it really well suited for startups, early stage businesses and small companies. You get to control your spend really effectively. You get to target your demo, you get instant performance data so you know how your campaign worked, which you can then use to optimize future campaigns, as well as many other advantages.

And lucky for us, well, we’ve got the country’s first and one of the most respected social media marketing companies right here in Michigan. That’s right, it’s Ignite Social Media, led by president Deidre Lambert-Bounds, and we got a chance to tap her for advice on how a small company should think about developing a social media campaign and executing it. Deidre?

So, you start with objective, what’s going to get your customers or your fans and followers to do whatever it is you want them to do. Whether that’s go to a website, purchase a product, click a link in your bio and your Instagram or whatever it is you’re trying to get them to do.

And then you have to craft the advertising content. How do we think about that, Deidre?

What’s your brand, what’s the voice that you need to speak in, and how do you get the most bang for your very limited dollars? Understanding that your voice is not the only voice going after that particular customer. So, you’ve got to use video or use engaging imagery. You’ve got to be very succinct in that message, but you absolutely have to be engaging.

If you’re a small business, put the power of social media marketing to work for you.

I’m Jeff Sloan, founder and CEO of StartupNation.com, and that’s today’s Business Beat on the Great Voice of the Great Lakes, WJR.
