WJR Business Beat Transcript

Good morning, Paul.

On today’s Business Beat, we’re already starting to think about the holiday shopping season, and if you’re a merchant, you need to begin preparations now in order to meet the new normal of customer expectations.

A new study by GlassBox Digital highlights key expectations of consumers in this new normal, and here are a couple of the key takeaways:

First, the study indicates that as a result of COVID-19, 70 percent of consumers plan to make most of their purchases online rather than in store this year. If you don’t have your e-commerce platform ready to go, start now so you’re in position to be able to sell online this holiday season. Meet the customers where they’re going to be.

Second, 82 percent expect retailers to accommodate them with personalized offers relevant directly to their interests and to provide a seamless shopping experience.

Third, spending will be down this year, as many as 27 percent say they intend to spend less. So, to be competitive this holiday season and win against the competition, tune up your customer experience now.

To wrap up, one bit of really welcome news from the study, 46 percent of those polled planned to buy from a local small business this year, and that is indeed great news.

I’m Jeff Sloan, founder and CEO of StartupNation.com, and that’s today’s Business Beat on the Great Voice of the Great Lakes, WJR.
