They say that luck is where preparedness meets opportunity. And if you need a story to illustrate the point, here’s great one.

The 17-year-old student manager of the Greece Athena High School basketball team, had his first opportunity to actually play in a game. The team was well ahead, so the coach put him in. It was the end of the last game of the regular season and the coach knew he deserved the chance. In the last four minutes of the game, he hit six 3-point shots. Plus a two pointer and a free throw for a total of 21 points (I think that’s the addition)!

Jason McElwain is autistic, so his amazing accomplishment is even more inspiring. I can only imagine him practicing long after the rest of the team had gone. He was preparing for his chance, if the opportunity ever came. And it came.

Now Hollywood producers are calling in hopes of making an inspirational movie about him.

I was struck by McElwain’s story. We can put his words to work as we grow our businesses. Here’s what he said (probably sometime after his teammates carried him off the court on their shoulders).

“…just keep working, just keep dreaming, you’ll get your chance and you’ll do it."
