Start a Business : Transform Your Life!
We all get stuck in ruts – relationships, habits, jobs. In the work world, you may just be occupying space in a cubicle or a factory work station or behind a retail counter because it’s what you know, or where you feel safe, or where you feel you have to be.
But we’re here to encourage you to escape that rut – now! You've got what it takes to start a business! It takes imagination, or daring, or sweat equity, or all three, but people who feed back to us tell us that becoming an entrepreneur has been the most extraordinary life change they can imagine!
And in many, many cases, breaking out of the workaday mold and starting a business has finally allowed them to follow a life plan, and lead a lifestyle, that is exactly suited to them.
Encouragement from people who’ve started a business
You work, you benefit: This is one of the simplest and most powerful motivations for starting a company. “I’m tired of making money for other people, working 40+ hours per week, just to get the chance of getting a 2-3% raise every year,” wrote DC in a follow-up to one of our blog entries. “No thanks.” DC was going on to start his own freelance-journalism business.
Live what you love: It really is possible! Bob and Mel Blanchard have even started a movement around the idea. The couple has always rejected the typical 9-to-5 job and followed their professional passions. Together, they have started eight businesses, built a home with their own hands, moved to the Caribbean isle of Anguilla to open their own restaurant, and written four books. Live What You Love is just the latest.
Time’s a wasting: The axiom is, “There’s no time like the present.” This is true in spades for someone like you who wants to start a business and shed your current worklife. The fact that you’re reading this is testament enough that you really want to do something transformative! “There is no better time than now,” Shawn, another blogger respondent, pointed out.
It’s also true that economic conditions for entrepreneurship have rarely been better. The U.S. economy remains strong, interest rates are still at historically low levels, corporate job security is at an all-time low, technology has opened a whole slew of opportunities to pursue – even from a home-based business, and through travel and other resources, global opportunities for entrepreneurs are more plentiful than ever.
Opportunities multiply: One thing that might surprise you about the entrepreneurial life is that it can present more than one opportunity. Once you unshackle yourself from the limitations of your current day job and start exploring the possibilities, you may find that you end up starting a particular venture and then it morphs into something else entirely. But the important point is that, through the whole process, you’ll be following your dream!
Peter Cervieri, for instance, is an entrepreneur who helped launch an e-learning startup called Scribe Studio. Yet he’s also managed to use the independence he has gained from the entrepreneurial life to start up another venture that includes his other love – spinning discs as a DJ in some of New York City’s hottest venues. And now, Peter is using his boat as a mobile concert venue that will hit major East Coast cities with his DJ pals.
Our Bottom Line
There are dozens of reasons to leave behind your hum-drum, insecure job and take a chance on entrepreneurship. Maybe most important of all, life is short. Make sure you live it fully – take advantage of every moment, start a business! You can always go back to 9-to-5!
